On the tenth anniversary of their initial spyware-fighting software release, the fine folks at Lavasoft have released a new version of the fantastic freeware program. While the free version still has some important features disabled, small improvements in the anniversary release show that the company isn't resting on its laurels.

Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition 8.0
Guest Bloggers Community Site, Wednesday, January 28, 2009Internet Explorer 8 pre-release
Guest Bloggers Community Site,
IE8 will include a wide variety of new features and tweaks, including: Web Slices, which allows users to add frequently checked sections of their favorite sites to their favorites toolbar; a new private browsing feature that disables browsing history, cookies, cache, and other saved data (it's already a feature in Safariand available via add-ons in Mozilla Firefox andInternet Explorer 7); and Accelerators, which are shortcuts for common browsing tasks like mapping addresses or translating text.
The release candidate of IE8 doesn't add too many new features to the mix, but it is much more stable than earlier beta versions of the browser. Try it out yourself, or read more about IE8 RC1 in the Download.com blog. Or take a walk through the new browser in pictures in our slide show.

HTML Optimizer 9.87 Java & Web Development
Guest Bloggers Community Site, Sunday, July 13, 2008
HTML optimization is a no-brainer, for yourself and for dev clients who want to speed up their sites and cut down on bandwidth bills. But not all code optimizers are created equal. More thoughtful and deliberate tools like HTML-Optimizer go through and analyze your code (not just HTML, but CSS, VBScript, JavaScript, and more) to separate it into blocks and prevent corruption, preserving your original files and letting you view your code before and after. HTML-Optimizer's "smart" features don't stop there: It only optimizes pages that you've changed since the last optimization (saving you time), it lets you tweak all of its optimization rules for specific folders, and it tracks every single change in an easy-to-reference history log.

FlySpeed DB Migrate to MySQL Programming Tools
Guest Bloggers Community Site, Saturday, July 12, 2008Hippo power HippoEDIT HTML-Optimizer
Guest Bloggers Community Site, Thursday, July 10, 2008
Software developers are often consummate power users, especially when it comes to their favorite tools and utilities. Apps like HippoEDIT are aimed directly at that mindset. You might not get the prettiest interface or, um, the most dignified name--but you will get power features like real-time code hints and a serious template engine with a ton of built-in tags (not to mention an editor boasting more than 160 built-in commands with customizable shortcuts). HippoEDIT comes with plenty more developer-friendly features, so if you're itching to try an editor that chooses butt-kicking over hand-holding, make sure you check it out.
Already have a favorite code editor? You can find plenty of other functionality in this week's software Picks: FlySpeed DB Migrate will save you time when you're moving MySQL or SQL Server databases; HTML-Optimizer is a smart HTML code and script optimization tool; and Setup Factory gives you everything you need to create compact, secure, self-contained installers.

Firefox wasn't the only major Web browser to update this past week. Opera released it's own demi-major update last Thursday, and it adds a few unique features. Quick Find stores actual content from Web pages, as well as titles and addresses. Opera Link lets you access your favorite sites anywhere.

The bad new: Azureus is dead. The good news: Vuze picks up right where Azureus left off, with a boatload of social content and file-sharing features to keep you Internet networkers busy for quite a while. Unfortunately, the interface is still a bit of drain on resources.

The Web browser/music player hybrid app that's based off Mozilla Firefox continues its long road to Version 1.0. The latest update includes better support for users with very large music libraries, speedier search, and the ability to search for text on Web pages.
